Höhr-Grenzhausen is a UNESCO Creative City, Recognised for its Craftsmanship

The international network of UNESCO Creative Cities has included Höhr-Grenzhausen/DE since 31 October 2025. Located in the Westerwald region between Cologne and Frankfurt, the town is one of 58 cities worldwide to be newly accepted into the network. The network now comprises 408 cities in over 100 countries. This award is significant for two reasons:

Höhr-Grenzhausen is not only Germany’s first Creative City of Crafts, but also the first small town to join the UNESCO network. The town is renowned for its pottery tradition, which was added to the Federal Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016. Since 2005, eight other German cities have also been recognised by the world cultural organisation. Creative Cities are global centres of excellence that stand out for their special commitment to film, music, design, gastronomy, media, art or literature.

“UNESCO Creative Cities use culture and creativity to promote sustainable urban development”, explains Maria Böhmer, President of the German UNESCO Commission. “The initiatives planned by Höhr-Grenzhausen will strengthen local ties to the pottery trade and create new opportunities for international exchange and knowledge transfer. The city can look forward to joining a dedicated network that promotes the exchange of knowledge and experience. I would like to congratulate everyone involved for their hard work in getting the city accepted into the network!”

Since 2004, the UNESCO Creative Cities programme has connected cities committed to utilising their creative potential for urban development. By joining the network, cities can benefit from each other by exchanging experiences, strategies, ideas, and best practices in contemporary art and culture, as well as promoting each other. In 2005, Berlin became the first German city to be included in the design category.
