SACMI RobotLoad

The technological evolution of the sanitaryware industry has led to the introduction of automation and new solutions for most production stages, from piece casting to glazing operations and much more.

Nevertheless, there are some activities which still today are normally carried out entirely by hand by operators and this leads to difficulties standardizing the quality of the pieces and to problems regarding the working conditions of personnel operating in unhealthy environments in contact with harmful substances.

The strategic objective of SACMI, international leader in industrial systems, is to introduce technological innovations even for these work processes which have been exclusively carried out by operators up to now. SACMI is therefore pleased to present its new RobotLoad technology.

RobotLoad, developed at SACMI’s R&D centre in Imola, is the automatic solution for loading and unloading sanitaryware in and out of kiln cars. At the moment these operations are performed manually by workers who have to handle heavy pieces at high temperatures with all the consequent risks that entails for health & safety and a high turnover of personnel for the company. Furthermore, as with all manual operations, kiln car loading and unloading can cause problems with the final quality of the pieces due to frequent damage caused by manual handling.

RobotLoad therefore introduces smart automation of all kiln car loading and unloading operations using newly designed technologies and tools. First of all, by employing special vision systems, RobotLoad is able to recognize the positions and models of the sanitaryware pieces to be handled so as to carry out the most suitable robot missions (just consider, for example, the differences between wall-hung and floor-mounted WCs). Subsequently the actual piece handling operation takes place; this is carried out by an innovative tool installed on the robot’s “wrist” thanks to a suction surface.

The tool with the suction surface is designed to be particularly versatile and suitable for handling all the different models and sizes of sanitaryware pieces: wall-hung WCs, bidets, washbasins etc. In this way a universal tool has been developed which avoids the necessity to continuously change the robot’s equipment from piece to piece, thus guaranteeing an extremely high production capacity.

In addition to flexibility of use, the tool with suction surface has also been carefully developed to safeguard the quality of the pieces being handled. Features such as the constant control of the vacuum applied to the piece, the different areas where the vacuum can be applied which are available on board the tool, a highly developed mechanical compensation system and sponge-like surface which comes into contact with the piece, all guarantee that the sanitaryware articles are picked-up and deposited with delicate and accurate movements even during kiln car loading (which is generally the most critical stage).

Handling of sanitaryware as described above is certainly the main reason why RobotLoad has been developed but SACMI’s engineers have gone even further. In fact, there are several other activities surrounding kiln car loading and unloading which are currently performed by operators such as, for example, preparation of the ceramic plates and expanded polystyrene sheets which are both used as firing supports for the pieces inside the kiln and are required to prevent damage caused by shrinkage during firing. RobotLoad is able to control and automate even these stages of the loading/unloading process since it is equipped with a special “double” tool for the smart control of supports (one side of the tool is used to handle the ceramic plates by means of a suction cup system, while the other side is equipped with special grippers for the pick-up and deposit of the polystyrene sheets).

In addition to the mechanical parts and tools, RobotLoad is also provided with highly developed software and electronics, such as the Smart Positioning Software and the Smart Vision System. The first of these works on an aspect which currently entirely depends on the experience and manual skills of the operator i.e. optimizing the positioning of the sanitaryware pieces on the kiln car.

By processing the information about the pieces arriving from the production line, Smart Positioning Software optimizes their position on the cars in a fully automatic and autonomous way.

Smart Vision System, on the other hand, is an advanced vision system which enables complete scans of the pieces on board the car to be carried out so as to identify the position of the sanitaryware pieces and their model. In this way it is possible to adapt the robot handling movements and pick-up missions to different situations.

A further added value offered by RobotLoad, which is difficult to fully express in the technical specification, is the sheer versatility of this technology. Consider that there are various different types of kilns and kiln cars (shuttle kilns, tunnel kilns, roller kilns…) and, furthermore, the space available to install loading/unloading cells and the production mix varies greatly from Customer to Customer and from plant to plant. RobotLoad, however, is specially designed for installation in any of these different situations and can be set up to meet the specific requirements of each of SACMI’s customers.
