Improving the Fracture Toughness of Yttria-Stabilised Zirconia: A Next Generation Structural Ceramic

Zirconia is an interesting and versatile material used in a wide range of applications. For highly desirable mechanical properties, Yttria-Stabilised Zirconia (YSZ) is especially useful for demanding industrial applications
that require high strength/wear and fracture-resistance. 3 mol-% YSZ (3YSZ) is widely used as a structural ceramic as a result of its high flexural strength and
fracture toughness – highly desirable properties for a number of applications. Using a lower yttria content to stabilise zirconia often correlates with an even greater level of fracture toughness, however, there are compromises to be made with lower mol-% YSZs usually experiencing decreased resistance to ageing.
A unique, proprietary manufacturing process – Emulsion Detonation Synthesis (EDS) – from Innovnano/ PT enables the production of 2 mol-% YSZ (2YSZ) that avoids this compromise. Innovnano 2YSZ provides outstanding fracture toughness in combination with scale-up reliability and desirable ageing and damage tolerance. It therefore offers an excellent alternative to 3YSZ for structural ceramic applications.
