KELLER – Successful in Russia for 100 Years

100 years ago in 1912, KELLER/DE supplied the first fully automatic brick factory to Russia.

By the stand-ards of the time it was an ultramodern factory that included the first fully automatic brick handling machine in Russia and a dryer with an automatic finger car. Only 2 years earlier, the dedicated inventor and founder of KELLER, Carl Keller, together with his son Joseph, developed the fully automatic brick handling machine Hörstel – a combination of cutter, pallet conveyor and elevator that was far ahead of its time and constituted a breakthrough in the mechanisation of the brick industry. Even then, the commercially literate Carl Keller recognised the importance of worldwide markets for his company. He attended many trade fairs and travelled throughout the world to promote his products and to dis-cover new markets. On one of his trips he visited Russia before World War I. In 1912, the first fully automatic brick handling machine in Russia was inaugurated in Astrakhan on the Caspian Sea. Since the 6th century, this Volga river town had already been an important centre for the distribution of goods between Europe and the states bordering the Caspian Sea. Oil production in Baku at the end of the 19th century also helped the Astrakhan region to restore its economic standing. The demand for brick products grew in line with the region’s revival. The brick factory installed by KELLER was far ahead of its time. Innovation and tradition have always been essential secrets of success that made KELLER one of the worldwide leading manufacturers of machinery and plants for the heavy clay industry. The technology of those times has proved successful to date. Many developments and inventions that are now state-of-the-art in this business line originated in the design department of KELLER in Ibbenbüren-Laggenbeck. KELLER stands out as a reliable partner for the Russian construction material industry. The ultramodern brick factories in Novosibirsk, Kirovo-Tschepezk, Terbuny and Pavlovsky Posad or the innovative brick filling plant in Kaluga. Competent partners are directly on site in the subsidiary KELLER VOSTOK in Moscow.
