Industrialization of the RECOSiC Process

Since 1 January 2025, ESK-SIC GmbH has been wholly owned by the Schunk Group. With this strategic acquisition, nothing now stands in the way of the planned industrialisation of the newly developed RECOSiC production line.

Since 2016, ESK-SIC GmbH has been working on the development of a process for the material conversion of all SiC-containing waste into SiC raw materials of the highest purity! The RECOSiC process was developed in collaboration with Fraunhofer IKTS over a period of almost 10 years. In addition to the ability to specifically adjust material properties such as powder morphology or even doping, the process enables CO2 emissions to be reduced by up to 80 % compared to conventional SiC synthesis – the Acheson process. At the same time, RECOSiC offers the possibility of implementing a SiC-based circular economy. This will create both independence for Europe in the supply of this critical raw material and a stable source of supply for the ceramics industry and its customers.

Upon receipt of the € 30 million funding approval from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia as part of the “Productive NRW – Critical Technologies for North Rhine-Westphalia” funding call last September, the Schunk Supervisory Board also gave the green light for the enormous investment in the planned RECOSiC production line with a capacity of >5000 t/a. Completion is scheduled for early 2028.
