Innovative Heat Treatment Installations for Novel High-Performance Ceramics, Modern Powder Materials of the Highest Quality as well as Recycling Processes

The climate protection targets of the international climate summit, the EU and the German government necessitate drastic improvements in the efficiency of high-temperature processes over the next two decades. This calls for new installation concepts, components and materials for power, drive and
thermal engineering. At the focus of the panel of experts who met for the 10th ceramitec Round Table at the Fraunhofer Centre for High-Temperature Materials and Design (HTL) in Bayreuth/DE on 21.10.2016 were high-temperature processes (>1000 °C) and the high-performance materials suitable for these –
especially oxide and non-oxide ceramics, carbon and silicate ceramics (monolithic, porous, fibrous or as fibre-matrix composites/CMCs).
From this round of talks, massive demands on the policy makers were voiced to initiate integrated, comprehensive funding projects in Germany and the EU to ensure that existing fundamental knowledge on high-temperature materials for lightweight design and the processes for their production are translated
into innovations with new products in industry. This new generation of high-performance ceramics will stimulate applications especially in thermal process engineering and assure international competitiveness. It is crucial that we don’t leave it up to the competitors and market leaders in Asia and the USA. That was
made plain in the technical presentation given by Prof. Dr Hubert Jäger on “High-Temperature Ceramic Fibres – the European Position in 2030”.
