Clay Protects Horses: “Happy Horse”

Scientists have discovered that zebras are largely protected against blood-sucking insects. It’s different with horses because the polarized light reflected by the dark colour of the horses’ coat magically attracts insects.

A striped coat reflects light in patterns, making zebras unattractive to blood-sucking insects. The German clay mining company Goerg & Schneider, now managed in the 3rd generation by Hartmut Goerg, graduate industrial engineer, and his wife Martina Goerg, who has a degree in business administration, has developed a clay granulate that is mixed with water to give horses zebra stripes.
