Electromobility in China: Battery Production as Key Factor

Festo AG & Co. KG/DE is a member of the Leading-edge Cluster Electromobility South-West (Spitzencluster Elektromobilität Süd-West). In order to provide support for the expansion of electromobility, the Chinese government plans to invest approximately EUR 11 billion in alternative drives by 2020.

A trip to China from 13–20 October 2012 enabled the automation specialists from Festo and the members of the leading-edge cluster Electromobility South-West to engage in a direct dialogue with representatives of Chinese companies and research institutes. 40 other partners from the cluster from industry, universities and research institutes were also travelling to China with Festo. By 2015, a million so-called “new energy vehicles” are supposed to be on the roads. Thus the focus of the trip was to learn about the current status of research and development in the area of electromobility in China as well as on making new contacts and establishing areas of co-operation. Experts believe that a key factor in a successful expansion of electromobility is the automated production of batteries for electric vehicles. Festo has been active since March 2012 in the “Innovation area production technologies”, which includes several research projects. Schunk, Dürr, ads-tec, team technik, and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) are Festo’s project partners. In this project, Festo is concentrating on the development of solutions for the high-speed handling of cells with a vacuum during battery assembly.
