Large-format Technical and Glazed Porcelain Tiles Produced by RAK Ceramics

RAK Ceramics, one of the world’s leading multinational ceramics manufacturer based in Ras Al Khaimah/UAE, has commissioned SACMI/IT to renew its tiles production.

Founded in 1989 with the support of the royal family of the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, RAK Ceramics chose to make its initial investments with SACMI. By 2010–2011 the company achieved staggering success, becoming the “world’s biggest tile manufacturer”, with a total output of 117 Mm2/a, including also the production in numerous overseas plants beyond UAE, like Bangladesh, India, China, Sudan and Iran. Sanitaryware and tableware manufacturing facilities were also established. RAK Ceramics began manufacturing large-format tiles back in 2001, when SACMI supplied – for the very first time outside the Italian Sassuolo district – the technology needed to make tiles as big as 1200 mm × 1800 mm and up to 20 mm thick, a result then achieved with traditional pressing methods and a high-tonnage PH7200 press. Abdallah Massaad, CEO of RAK Ceramics, focussed the company on large-format tiles
once again by promoting a series of investment projects aimed at boosting efficiency and renewing the product range. Applying the new CONTINUA PLUS line which is a technology developed and patented by SACMI for the manufacture of large-format tiles, RAK will manufacture technical and glazed porcelain tiles as big as 1500 mm × 3000 mm with different thicknesses. The CONTINUA PLUS line has a super-compactor able to press ceramic powders at a pressure of 450 kg/cm2. The new line is capable of being incorporated in the existing plant without compromising the already impressive output capacity. The order includes the powder loading unit with dry DDD digital machines, full-body APC filling devices and the accessories needed to perform double filling and multi-layer effects, also with micronized powders. The pressing section includes the PCR1600 PLUS super-compactor, followed by a new single-layer drier with a 3500 mm wide inlet. A COLORA HD 1808 digital decorator using 8-colour inks completes the line.
